Friday 26th - Curtain Bank Working Bee Morning Tea

Posted 11 years, 3 months ago    0 comments

Curtain Bank Working Bee and Morning Tea

Friday July 26th

Town Hall, Supper Room (next to WEC)

10am - 12noon

Bring something to share for morning tea. We'll be measuring curtains and sorting stuff out for the Curtain Bank. If you have a tape measure, bring it along!

5 houses have had a whole set of curtains and tracks measured, sewed and installed! 5 more houses have received curtains where they only needed one or two. We're measuring 5 more homes today.

People are coming in the door every week. It's dissapointing to see the state of the rental homes in Raglan. Cold, damp, no curtains or useless curtains, no insulation... We've got a big job to do here. Come help us out!

See you next Friday!

New book on Hector's Dolphin - DOLPHINS DOWN UNDER from Liz Slooten and Steve Dawson

Posted 11 years, 4 months ago    0 comments

Liz Slooten and Steve Dawson, have just published their new book DOLPHINS DOWN UNDER - UNDERSTANDING THE NEW ZEALAND DOLPHIN
And we have copies on their way to the environment centre!

"This book introduces the Hector's dolphin to readers of all ages. Liz Slooten and Steve Dawson began their study in 1984. In the 1990s they sold their house to buy a catamaran to carry out a dolphin survey.

The authors have intensively studied the dolphin’s distribution, behaviour, biology, reproduction and communication, using photography as their principal research tool. They were determined to make the latest information about these creatures accessible to a general public

They pull no punches on conservation questions. Early on in their research they realised that dolphin numbers are not sustainable under current fishing practices. Says Liz, “The last section of the book provides suggestions for effective dolphin protection measures and encourages readers to get actively involved. This part of the book will be controversial in some circles but very popular in other circles."

Or come in and check out a copy, I had a sneak peek at Peggy's copy - the photos are brilliant!

Thinking about Spring.... Sustainable September!

Posted 11 years, 4 months ago    8 comments

Yup... we're already thinking about spring here!

What workshops would you like to see this Sustainable September? What workshops could you hold? Perhaps you have a skill to share with our community? Or maybe you can tell us about our local birds and bees? Or perhaps your nana can show us how to make our own bread, cheese or preserves?

In past years, we've enjoyed learning about...

  • Earth building
  • Beekeeping
  • Native fish
  • Composting
  • Seed raising and saving
  • Timebanking
  • ...and more!

Check out previous years' calendars and stay tuned for this year's events.
